Homemade Nutella (Hazelnut Chocolate Spread)

SAM TAN'S KITCHEN HAS MOVED! Please visit the new website/online store at www.samtanskitchen.com. You can also follow Sam on InstagramFacebook and Twitter. Thank you!

YES, Nutella made in your home, presumably by you, to the delight and wonderment of everyone who lives with you and gets to sample it :)

This instantly shot straight to the top of my Recipes to Test list when I saw several versions of it popping up on sites like Foodgawker. My first attempt turned out a little grainy (in future more thorough blending is required), but taste-wise it was absolutely spot-on.

Blend then spread as desired, or be piggy like me and eat it with a spoon :)

Homemade Nutella (Hazelnut Chocolate Spread)

150g hazelnuts- Roast at 200º C for 10-15 mins until very fragrant, then rub vigorously with a cloth towel to remove as much of the skins as possible. Blitz in a small spice mill/blade grinder/blender until it forms a very smooth peanut butter-like paste.

Add and continue blending until smooth:
100g milk chocolate, melted and cooled
2 tbsp cocoa powder
1/2 cup icing sugar
1/2 tsp vanilla extract
A few drops of vegetable oil

Store in a jar at room temperature. Slather on everything!

  2. Oh, uh, I'm in trouble now. This morning as I was spreading heaps of Nutella on my toast, I was thinking to myself that there's gotta be a way for me to make this wonderful stuff. Saw this from Foodgawker and got impressed. I didn't realized how easy it is to make homemade Nutella ...which is weird because I often make my own peanut butter and almond butter. I have everything in the pantry to make this. It's happening soon - tomorrow early morning!

  4. Haha it is DEFINITELY addictive, I ended up eating it like a tub of chocolate mousse rather than actually spreading it on anything!

    Happy trying it out!

  10. This looks so great! But do is a food processor a must-have to make this? Would a blender or mixer work?

  11. Thanks peasepudding!

Dani- I used rapeseed oil which is just sold as basic "vegetable oil" in the UK, but you can use sunflower or any other mild variety. I would avoid olive oil as I find it tastes too strong, but as it's only a few drops to make it more spreadable maybe it can work too. Good luck, hope your daughters like it!:)

Chic Cookies- awesome, thanks for the link!:)

Jocelyn- I probably shouldn't use the term food processor (gonna edit it now), what I actually used was a small blade-grinder/spice mill, which is exactly like a blender but with a smaller upside down cup attachment rather than a big jug for juices. So yes a blender will work, though a mixer definitely won't (you need sharp whizzing blades that can turn it into a paste).

    Stacey and Jess- happy trying!:)

  16. You're welcome everyone, can't take credit for creating the recipe there were several versions I found online to inspire this :) enjoy trying it!

Heather- I don't think it's much cheaper to be honest, as hazelnuts are pretty expensive... but you get to say YOU made it :)

Memoria- how do you make a nutless version of this??

  19. I made this last night. It tasted great, but it's not quite as smooth as yours. I think maybe I just didn't use a high enough quality chocolate. or maybe 1/2 a teaspoon of butter melted with the chocolate will give me the silkiness I need. I'll try that tonight and see.

  20. Confused by the comment about a nutless chocolate nut spread, I did a quick search. I didn't understand. I mean, why make a nutless nutella?

My search reminded me that (of course) some folk have allergies to nuts, but they feel left out and want something similar, right? So what can they use which is even remotely like nuts?

Sunflower seeds, in case anyone else was wondering.

Have collected some 'cob nuts' (a type of hazel nut) from the hedgerows of Devon and Cornwall and gonna have a go turning them into nutella.

Wild food, fresh and delicious and free! Marvellous.

  21. Does anyone know how long it will keep for? (I know, dumb question!) but I picked a whole heap of hazelnuts today, and I'm wondering whether to make a huge batch for Christmas presents and stuff, or keep them in their shells for a bit longer...

  22. Hmm not sure Sarah, I'm guessing like all nuts they can turn rancid so best to make them as freshly as possible?
